Description

This engraving depicts a panoramic view of the city of Hebron (Al-Khalil), located in Palestine, in the 19th century. At the center of the composition, the Mosque of Abraham (Cave of the Patriarchs), one of the city's most sacred structures, is clearly visible. This structure was built over the sacred cave believed to contain the tombs of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives. The mosque's monumental rectangular form and twin minarets reflect the influence of Ottoman-era architecture in the region, while the houses and terraced stone buildings rising around it document the Palestinian urban fabric of the period. Several figures in the foreground represent travelers or pilgrims taking a break on their way to the city; through these figures, Hebron's identity as a "pilgrimage" as both a religious and historical destination is conveyed to the viewer. Hebron holds great significance for all three Abrahamic religions. In Judaism, it is considered sacred as the burial place of the ancestors; in Christianity, as one of the ancient cities in the biblical narratives; and in Islam, as the city of Abraham, known as "Khalilullah" (Friend of God). Therefore, the work depicts not only a cityscape but also a symbolic space representing historical continuity and the yearning for peace at the intersection of three religions.
