This engraving depicts the diamond mining and processing processes in Brazil, essentially highlighting the system of forced labor that formed the backbone of the colonial economy. The scaffolding and chute system erected in the open air, the manipulation of water, and the repetitive physical movements of the workers technically describe the labor process. However, it also carries a harsh reality, presenting the human body as a mere part of the production mechanism. The title, "Negroes," used in the language of the period, while problematic from a contemporary perspective, reflects the racializing terminology and perspective of the era in which the engraving was produced.
