This engraving reflects Eurocentric observations of daily life in Southeast Asian societies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The region known as "Cochin China" encompassed the southern part of present-day Vietnam. The engraving depicts local people playing featherball with their feet in an open village area. This game is still a traditional sport known in Vietnam today as "Đa cau." The background of thatched-roof huts, tropical trees, and mountain landscapes reflects the region's climatic patterns. The engraving reflects the tendency of contemporary European travelers to present Eastern societies as both exotic and idyllic. Such scenes were illustrated in 19th-century travel literature under the heading "Manners and Customs of Nations," intended to present cultural diversity in an educational and engaging way.
