Description

This engraving depicts a monumental rock-cut tomb popularly known as the "Tombs of the Kings of Judah." This designation is a traditional, though historically inaccurate, term coined by Western travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries for the large-scale tombs they encountered in the region. In fact, this structure is associated with one of the rock-cut tombs in the vast Jewish necropolis northwest of Jerusalem known as the Tombs of the Sanhedrin, the Tombs of the Valley of the Kings, or the Kalfa Rock Tomb. The structure seen in the engraving exhibits characteristic features of monumental tomb architecture belonging to high-ranking Jewish families of the Second Temple period (1st century BC - 1st century AD). The front section features a wide entrance area carved into the rock face and a rich frieze belt extending above. This frieze features round rosettes, geometric ornamentation, triglyph-like vertical motifs, and vegetal reliefs. This decorative repertoire reflects the Hellenistic and Roman influences frequently encountered in the tombs of Herod's era in Jerusalem. The general atmosphere of the engraving, combined with the rough texture of the rock surface, the destroyed decorative elements and the surrounding vegetation, successfully demonstrates the historical depth of the ancient necropolises of Jerusalem.
