Description

This engraving depicts the Dead Sea, located on the Palestine-Jordan border. At approximately -430 meters, the lowest point on Earth below sea level, the Dead Sea has historically been a subject of both geographical and scientific curiosity due to its extreme salinity and high mineral density. Referred to as the Dead Sea in biblical tradition, this body of water also holds a religious significance due to its association with the narratives of Sodom and Gomorrah. The engraving masterfully captures the barren and dramatic landscape of the Dead Sea, frequently emphasized by 19th-century European travelers. The steep cliffs on the right illustrate the geological diversity of the Dead Mountain and its surroundings, while the dark mountain silhouettes on the left suggest the region's volcanic and tectonic structure. The calm, motionless surface of the water, positioned at the center of the composition, successfully conveys the Dead Sea's distinctive tranquility. The subtle use of light and shadow reveals the harsh geography of the valley and the lake's highly saline, almost metallic, surface.
