This engraving reflects the structural layout of Old Jerusalem, featuring vaulted, stone-arched passageways, narrow streets, and occasionally covered corridors, which are among its characteristic architectural features. Such street structures were shaped from the Middle Ages, considering both the city's defensive needs and the region's climatic conditions (sun protection and cooling), and continued in use during the Ottoman period. The elaborately crafted fountain architecture on the right side of the engraving combines architectural elements from the Crusader and early Ottoman periods. The pointed-arched pediment, relief geometric ornamentation, and stonework allude to Jerusalem's multilayered religious and cultural heritage. The winding, dimly lit passageway at the center of the engraving creates an atmospheric scene where light filters in from a limited source.
