Description

This engraving depicts the outer walls of 19th-century Jerusalem, and particularly the deep valleys in the southwestern part of Jerusalem, which have historically served as both a natural defensive line and an urban boundary. The steep cliffs and slopes in the foreground are a clear example of the natural geography specific to the area surrounding Jerusalem's old city walls. The engraving presents a silhouette enriched by Ottoman-era residential structures, minarets, and domes rising from the upper elevations of the city walls. The minaret, prominent in the upper right, highlights the visibility of the Muslim neighborhoods in the 19th century, while the dense urban development in the background reflects Jerusalem's historically multilayered and complex urban fabric. Many of the structures in the engraving represent a historical continuum, interweaving architectural layers from the Crusader, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.
