This engraving depicts the topographical settlement, including the remains of city walls, ramparts, and stone houses, of Bethlehem, located in the West Bank, approximately 10 km south of Jerusalem, at the beginning of the 19th century. Located south of the Judean Hills, Bethlehem is considered the birthplace of Jesus Christ according to Christian belief. A multi-layered settlement, Bethlehem spanned from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages, from the Crusaders to the Mamluk and Ottoman administrations, and for centuries remained a central stop, particularly on the east-west pilgrimage.
