This engraving schematically and individually presents the elements of the high priestly garments used in the ancient Jewish temple, based on detailed descriptions in the Old Testament (especially Exodus 28 and Leviticus 8). The engraving shows individual elements of ritual attire, including the high priest's headdress, the breastplate (hoshen) containing the Urim and Thummim, the embroidered ephod, the ketone (long under-tunic), the belts, and the trousers (michnasayim). Such iconographic arrangements became standard in 19th-century Orientalist publishing, both supporting a philological approach to the sacred text and providing the visual evidence base for the discipline known as "sacred archaeology."
