Description

This engraving depicts the ancient city of Samaria. Samaria is the site of the settlement of Shomron, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Israel, and functioned as a regional political, economic, and religious center from the 9th century BC onward. The octagonal architectural fragment located on the upper level of the building ruin depicted in the engraving alludes to the characteristic form of ancient Hellenistic-Roman sacred structures and Byzantine martyrium-style memorial chapels in the region.
