This engraving depicts the horse-shepherd warrior typology representative of the "Kyrgyz/Kazakh" communities living in the steppes of West Turkestan. In 19th-century French ethnographic literature, the term "Tartarie" was used as a broader regional term encompassing the regions of present-day Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and West Turkestan. The figures in the engraving are depicted with the nomadic horse culture, light archery tactics, and the mobile equipment (bow, quiver, short scimitar, etc.) required by nomadic life, a fundamental indicator of steppe warriorship. The conical tent type (felt tent/yurt) in the background is a fundamental form of "portable architecture" adapted to both the climate and the constant cavalry movement of steppe societies.
