Description

This engraving depicts Bethlehem, the city considered the birthplace of Jesus. Within the European-centric orientalist artistic approach of the period, the engraving serves as both a religious and topographical document. In the foreground of the composition, the scene of the pilgrimage to Bethlehem is seen, accompanied by figures of Mary and Joseph, accompanied by a donkey. This iconographic detail reflects the theme of the "Journey to Bethlehem" before the birth of Jesus in Christian tradition. A single shining star on the horizon, known as the Nativity Star in Christian iconography, represents the celestial sign that heralded the birth of Jesus. The stone buildings rising in the background reflect the city's architectural texture dating from the mid-19th-century Ottoman period. Domes and arched facades are combined with stonework typical of the Palestinian region, while the vast building complex on the right is the Church of the Nativity. This structure, built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Constantine (4th century AD), is one of the oldest and most sacred places of worship in Christianity. The artist's balance of light and shadow in the engraving creates a divine atmosphere; the star shining against the dark sky is both the visual focal point of the composition and the center of theological meaning. The engraving is not merely a landscape depiction, but also a religious-topographical interpretation intended to revive the biblical narrative and the sacred geography of Palestine for European viewers.
