Description

This engraving, titled "Ismailia on the Suez Canal," depicts a scene of great historical significance in the context of the construction of the Suez Canal in the second half of the 19th century and the formation of modern Egypt. The city of Ismailia, seen in the engraving, was founded in 1862 by Ferdinand de Lesseps, the director of the Suez Canal project, and named after Ismail Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt at the time. The city was planned as a strategic center in the middle of the canal and was built both as a base from which to manage engineering projects and as an example of a European-style settlement. This engraving is one of the rare visual sources documenting the new form of urbanization that emerged during the canal's opening (1859–1869). The camellias caravans and local figures in the foreground of the composition represent the transitional geography between the Nile Delta and the Sinai Peninsula. The buildings of European architecture rising in the background stand out as symbols of modernization and Western influence. The use of natural light in the engraving creates a visual depth that evokes both the early morning hours and the intense heat of the desert atmosphere. The cloud texture in the sky is rendered using the hatching (linear hatching) technique, common in engravings of the period, achieving both a dramatic atmosphere and a sense of movement. Geographically, the city is situated on the western shore of Lake Timsah, directly in the middle of the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas. This location is emphasized in the engraving both by the depiction of a wetland populated by water birds and by the architectural layout running parallel to the canal line. The herons and reeds in the foreground symbolize the new balance this engineered, artificial landscape has established with the natural world.
