Description

This color engraving depicts the ancient Phoenician city of Sidon (Sidon) with the Lebanon Mountains rising in the background. Sidon, one of the most important port cities in the Eastern Mediterranean throughout history, lies within the borders of present-day Lebanon and was an ancient center continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. The engraving depicts sailboats docking at the shore, the choppy sea, and the ruins of castles along the coast, reflecting the "romantic harbor" atmosphere characteristic of 19th-century travel engravings. As one of the oldest and richest cities of Phoenician civilization, Sidon formed a key hub in the Mediterranean trade network from the 3rd millennium BC onward. The famous purple dye (Tyrian purple) produced here was one of the most valuable trade goods in the ancient world, becoming a status symbol even during the Roman Empire. The city was also known for its glasswork, seafaring, and shipbuilding. The city fell successively under Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, and Ottoman rule, and remained an important commercial and cultural center throughout all periods. The Lebanon Mountains in the background, known throughout history for their sacred cedar forests and referred to as the "Mountain of God" in both biblical texts and ancient Near Eastern literature, have historically formed Sidon's natural defense line.
