Captain James Cook (1728-1779) made three separate voyages to explore the Pacific and Southern Oceans with the ships Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure and Discovery. During these voyages, Captain Cook not only encountered Pacific cultures for the first time, but also brought back to Europe a large number of objects, information and drawings introducing this culture. Captain James Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779 on his third voyage. The polar bear depicted in the engraving was drawn by John Webber, an artist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyage during his visit to Avacha Bay in Kamchatka with the ships Resolution and Discovery.
