Description

This engraving depicts the scene in Genesis, Chapter 45, verses 1 through 15, of the Old Testament, where Joseph finally reveals himself to his brothers and reconciles with them. Betrayed and sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph, through God's wisdom, rose to rule Egypt in the name of Pharaoh and prepared his family for salvation during the years of famine. When Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers, he did not blame them, but rather stated that God used this event for a greater good. This is a powerful message that God's will can transform even the most painful experiences into a means of salvation. The engraving depicts a dramatic scene with intense emotion. On the right, Joseph opens his arms to his brothers, symbolizing both forgiveness and compassion, while embracing his brother Benjamin. On the left, the brothers, prostrate on the ground, express their feelings of guilt and remorse through physical expression. The use of light and shadow emphasizes the space in which Joseph stands, visually reinforcing his elevation as a divine instrument. The architectural columns and the horizon in the background add both historical and epic depth to the scene.
