Description

This engraving depicts the meeting of Joseph and his brothers in Egypt, as recounted in the 44th chapter of Genesis, part of the Old Testament of the Bible. After his brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy and betrayal, Joseph rose to rule Egypt on behalf of Pharaoh. During a time of famine, his brothers came to him begging for bread. Here, Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. This encounter would serve as a tool for Joseph to make his brothers feel the burden of past sin and to test them. This encounter symbolizes forgiveness, humility, and trust in God's mysterious plan on the journey of faith. The engraving stands out for its arrangement of figures and emotional intensity. On the right, Joseph, dressed in magnificent robes, stands in an authoritative pose, symbolizing worldly power and the exaltation ordained by God. On the left, his brothers, kneeling and carrying gifts, appear in a submissive posture. The different facial expressions (guilt, fear, hope, and despair) and the contrast of light and shadow create a dramatic intensity. Thus, the engraving is both a visual interpretation of God's justice and mercy, and a powerful reflection of tragedy and reconciliation.
