This engraving depicts the scene in Genesis, Chapter 41, Verse 25 of the Old Testament, where Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dream. No Egyptian wise man or magician could interpret the two complex dreams the Egyptian Pharaoh had. Unjustly enslaved and imprisoned, Joseph was brought from prison at the suggestion of the chief mayor. With the wisdom God gave him, Joseph interpreted the Egyptian Pharaoh's dreams. He explained that both of the Pharaoh's dreams had the same meaning, and that Egypt and the surrounding region would experience seven years of plenty, followed by seven years of famine. With this explanation, he prepared not only Egypt but also the surrounding peoples for salvation. The engraving presents the scene within a dramatic hierarchy. Pharaoh, dressed in magnificent robes, sits pensively on his throne, while Joseph, brought from prison, speaks humbly before him. The background details emphasize the splendor and authority of the palace, while the fine craftsmanship of the figures' attire reflects the cultural and historical atmosphere of the period.
