Description

This engraving depicts the event in Chapter 37 of Genesis, the Old Testament book of the Bible, where Joseph was thrown into a pit by his brothers. One of Jacob's twelve sons, Joseph had earned his father's affection the most, arousing his brothers' jealousy. When Joseph's dreams foreshadowed his future ascendancy, his brothers' jealousy and anger intensified. The engraving depicts Joseph, his hands bound, being lowered into a deep pit by his brothers. The brothers' different facial expressions reflect feelings of jealousy, anger, and guilt. This scene symbolizes how, in religious texts, jealousy, as the root of sin, severs the bond between brothers and unjustly persecutes an innocent person.
