Description

This engraving depicts Jacob's dream (Jacob's Ladder), recounted in verses 10–17 of Genesis, Chapter 28, part of the Old Testament. The engraving depicts Jacob, having spent the night in an open field during his journey, falling asleep with his head on a rock. In his dream, Jacob sees a ladder extending from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. At the top of the ladder, God appears and addresses Jacob, saying, "I am the Lord, the God of your forefathers Abraham and Isaac..." The engraving dramatically interprets this scene. Jacob's curled body language represents both his vulnerability and his being surrounded by God's grace. The angelic figures on the ladder illustrate how the divine plan relates to the world, while the composition extending toward the sky symbolizes a spiritual journey ascending to God. In this context, the ladder is the symbol of the celestial connection and a mystical bridge established between God and man. The nighttime atmosphere in the engraving enhances the sacredness and mystery of the dream, while the graceful, upward movements of the angelic figures convey the sublimity of the divine dimension to the viewer.
