The Spanish Inquisition was approved by Pope IV Sixtus in 1483 at the request of Isabella I of Castile.It is aimed at Christianizing Muslims and Jews. 200,000 Jews left Spain in 1492. Many of them also took refuge in the Ottoman Empire. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims and Jews of Arab origin, or indigenous peoples of the region we know today as Spain, were massacred in the inquisition courts. Christianized Muslims and Jews formed groups called moriscos. All of those who could not be assimilated in the following periods were exiled to other parts of the world, especially North Africa.
