Description

This engraving depicts the scene "Rebekah's Encounter at the Well," recounted in the 24th chapter of Genesis, part of the Old Testament. The scene takes place in Mesopotamia, where Abraham's faithful servant Eliezer is sent by Abraham to find a suitable wife for his master's son Isaac. Eliezer prays to God, "May the woman who gives me water before I come to the well asking for water be chosen as Isaac's wife." Upon this prayer, Rebekah appears before him and offers water not only to Eliezer but also to his camels, thus confirming God's will. The engraving depicts Rebekah giving water to Eliezer. Eliezer is tired and thirsty, like someone returning from a long journey in the desert. Rebekah, with simplicity, humility, and hospitality, offers water from her pot. The camels seen in the background and other women walking along the road enhance the pastoral and ancient setting of the scene. However, this scene is not simply an example of hospitality; it is the beginning of a divine plan shaped by God's providence. The small box Eliezer holds in his hand symbolizes the betrothal gifts he will give Rebekah—a gold nose ring and bracelets—symbols confirming that she is the bride God has designated.
