Description

This engraving depicts the scene immediately following Lot's salvation and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by divine wrath, as described in Genesis, chapter 19, verse 30, of the Old Testament. The engraving depicts Lot and his two daughters sheltering under a rock, while in the background, silhouettes of cities ablaze with fire and smoke draw attention. This dramatic scene visualizes the manifestation of God's justice and one of the greatest moral warnings in human history. Lot's two daughters cling to their father, watching the proceedings in fear and astonishment. Lot, on the other hand, is in a pensive, exhausted pose. Another striking element in this scene is a lone figure standing tall in the distance. Looking back, Lot's wife, who disobeyed God's command, stands transformed into a pillar of salt. This figure symbolizes the limits of human will in the face of divine law and how attachment to the worldly can turn into a disaster.
