This engraving depicts a sacrificial offering made as a token of thanksgiving to God, based on the words of Genesis, chapter 8, verse 20, of the Old Testament, "And Noah built an altar to the Lord, and of every clean beast and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings to the Lord upon the altar." The flood had ended, the waters had receded, and Noah's ark had come to rest on Mount Ararat. This scene depicts the offering of a sacrifice, one of the first acts of the flood survivors. At the center of the engraving is Noah, an elderly figure with his arms raised to the sky in prayer. To his right and left, his descendants stand in reverence and awe, witnessing the sacrifice.
