Description

This engraving is titled "Adam Carrying Abel's Body" and depicts the first murder scene in the Book of Genesis from a dramatic and deeply religious perspective. The scene depicts Abel, who was killed by his brother Cain in jealousy after the sacrifice was accepted by God, being carried by his father, Adam. At the center of the engraving, Adam, as a father, carries his son's lifeless body in his strong arms. Abel's body is displayed lifeless and defenseless, reflecting the coldness of death and the tragedy of innocence. Beside him, Eve covers her face with her hands, immersed in profound grief. The parents' helplessness in the face of this devastating scene reveals one of the greatest sufferings experienced by the first family. The beams of light from the sky symbolize God's all-seeing divine gaze and the fact that this murder is not only an earthly event but also an event that disrupts the divine order. Small scenes in the corners of the composition complementarily depict the preceding and subsequent events of the murder. One scene depicts the sacrifices being offered, the other the actual murder itself. This arrangement provides a unified narrative and demonstrates how Cain's jealousy resulted in divine injustice. Within the context of religious iconography, this engraving is both a mourning and a call for justice. Abel's death is not merely the death of a brother, but the first human murder following the original sin. With this event, humanity became guilty not only of crimes against God but also of crimes against one another.
