Description

The Redan was one of the strongest defensive positions on the southern line of the Russian army during the siege of Sevastopol. British forces launched two major attacks on this position. The largest was the assault on September 8, 1855, depicted in this engraving. On the same day, the French captured the Malakoff Redoubt, while the British failed to capture the Redan. General Charles Ash Windham (1810-1870) commanded the British 2nd Division in this assault. He distinguished himself bravely during the assault on the Redan, but the troops suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat. The figure depicted in the center of the engraving represents the moment when Windham himself led the charge.
