Description

This panoramic engraving provides a unique strategic view from the high ground above Balaklava, encompassing the geography where two of the Crimean War’s most famous battles took place: the Battle of Balaklava (25 October 1854) and the Battle of Inkerman (5 November 1854). The line of tents and earthworks in the foreground depict the British and allied defensive lines, while the vast open plains and hills in the background set the stage for cavalry charges, artillery exchanges, and the infamous “Charge of the Light Brigade.” The print illustrates not only the military logistics of the time (camp layouts, fortifications) but also the dramatic natural landscape that shaped tactics and the fate of armies. Such views were instrumental for period audiences in understanding the scale and hardship of the conflict. William Simpson, who painted this engraving, was a painter and engraver sent to the war zones for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean War.
