This engraving shows the British cemetery at the northern end of Balaklava Harbour during the Crimean War. The area was used both as a supply centre and as a burial ground behind the lines throughout the war. It shows a military burial ceremony. The engraving shows British officers and soldiers at a military burial ceremony under the snow, with logistic convoys and ships anchored in the harbour in the background. William Simpson, who painted this engraving, was a painter and engraver sent to the war zones for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean War.
