Description

This engraving depicts a church located behind the Redan fortification at Sebastopol, showing severe damage caused by artillery fire. The ruined dome, scattered debris, and the presence of soldiers and civilians highlight the impact of war on religious and civilian structures. The church seen in the engraving is most likely the Church of the Twelve Apostles, considering its location and period. The English took two large bells from this church as spoils of war after the siege ended. One of these bells is in the Round Tower at Windsor Castle. William Simpson, who painted this engraving, was a painter and engraver sent to the war zones for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean War.
