This engraving presents a panoramic perspective of the defensive infrastructure, inner fortifications, and city batteries of the besieged city of Sevastopol during the Crimean War on June 23, 1855. In the foreground, soldiers positioned in the trenches reflect ongoing defensive preparations and the constant threat of artillery fire, while in the background, the city and its defensive structures are depicted in detail. William Simpson, who painted this engraving, was a painter and engraver sent to the war zones for The Illustrated London News during the Crimean War.
