The attacks were directed particularly at the Malakoff Redif and the surrounding fortifications. In the engraving, Engineer Colonel Guerin, standing tall in the midst of an explosion during the night attack, is depicted as a determined commander who directs his troops. His bravery was described by the French public as an example of heroism.
